One Medical chooses DX for measuring developer experience
8x + return on investment in DX
One Medical provides primary care through an integrated approach, combining physical clinics with a digital platform for scheduling, medical records, and virtual consultations. With over 150 engineers supporting critical business functions, success relies on giving developers the tools and environment to thrive.
As the company grew, gathering and acting on developer feedback became a critical challenge. “Leadership recognizes the importance of having a good developer experience,” says Jason Kennedy, Senior Engineering Manager. “It directly impacts their ability to deliver, and we know that when developers are productive, they’re more satisfied too.”
One Medical initially tried shadowing engineers and running sporadic surveys. “This approach got us started, but it had clear limitations,” Kennedy explains. Shadowing was labor-intensive, and lower than 25% survey participation yielded unreliable insights. Without complete data or a framework to assess performance, addressing root causes wasn’t possible.
Building a better developer feedback approach was explored. But the effort required to develop and conduct surveys, analyze feedback, and distribute insights required significant upfront investment and ongoing effort to achieve. “When we really looked at the requirements, it was a lot of work—more than we could justify,” Kennedy explains.
Instead, One Medical partnered with DX. DX provided a purpose built tool for collecting developer feedback and delivering insights tailored to engineering leadership. By adopting DX, One Medical was able to avoid the costs of building and managing their own system, allowing their team to instead focus on driving improvements.
Using DX, One Medical has consistently achieved 96%+ developer response rates providing clear visibility into how to improve workflows, tooling, and culture. Thanks to the efficiency gains DX has helped drive, One Medical reclaimed over 18,000 hours of developer time in their first year with DX—the equivalent to 8 full-time engineers. “DX is embedded in our engineering culture,” says Kennedy. “It’s shifted how we prioritize improvements, making it easier to focus on the right issues and drive impact across the organization.”
One Medical plans to expand its use of DX by streamline onboarding for new developers and integrating the platform into workflows like team retrospectives and tooling evaluations. These efforts will help them address emerging challenges and continue building an engineering organization capable of driving innovation in patient care.
