3x+ return on investment in DX
TrueLayer is Europe’s leading open banking network, enabling instant payments with real-time financial data. Its team of over one hundred engineers is the backbone of the product, making a high-performing organization essential to serving customers.
Engineering leadership at TrueLayer has long understood the importance of measuring and improving developer productivity. To gather data, they tracked metrics like pull requests and cycle times from GitHub. While helpful, these metrics didn’t address the deeper challenge: understanding how to turn insights into meaningful action. “It was very difficult to go from a metric to an action. How do we actually drive improvement in this area?” shared Michail Giorgaras, Director of Engineering. Metrics provided direction, but without clarity on next steps, inefficiencies persisted and leadership struggled to prioritize resources or align teams.
TrueLayer adopted DX to expand the metrics they track and complement them with qualitative data that shows how to improve. DX uncovered key sources of friction—such as long CI wait times, complex code reviews, and fragmented documentation—that slowed onboarding and hindered collaboration. Centralizing documentation quickly became a top priority, with DX providing the clarity and focus needed to address these challenges.
By surfacing pain points and their root causes, DX enables leaders to align efforts where they matter most. “It’s very easy to figure out where we should put our efforts next, where teams experience the most pain, what is the most important for them, and how we can help teams to improve. DX closes the loop,” says Giorgaras.
For TrueLayer, the benefits extend beyond efficiency. Investing in DX demonstrates their commitment to creating an environment where engineers can thrive. “We consciously invest in making it the best possible environment for engineers because I know they’ll do their best. I trust people to do their best; we just need to make it easy for them,” says Maryanna Rayko, VP Engineering.
Looking ahead, TrueLayer is focused on centralizing documentation, with DX providing the foundation to track progress and drive improvements.
