Introducing the Developer Experience Index

To date, DX has provided four core KPI metrics focused on perceived speed, ease, time loss, etc. But our customers have increasingly asked us for a single metric to be able to report on. Having a single metric brings the benefit of increased clarity and focus for executives, managers, and teams.
To address this need, we are introducing the Developer Experience Index (DXI) score. DXI is a mean average of all driver sentiment scores, giving you a single overall score for developer experience that can be benchmarked against the industry.
DXI scores are displayed at the top of your main snapshot results screen. Existing DX KPIs (i.e. perceived speed, ease, time loss, etc) have been moved to a new “Delivery” tab that gives you a view of your overall delivery outcomes.
In addition to the DXI score, we are releasing a number of additional improvements:
- Improved snapshot results navigation. You can now quickly jump between snapshots, teams, and trends without switching contexts.
- More powerful workflow metrics. DX now displays workflow metrics in their own dedicated tab, making them more discoverable and useful. We’ve released 19 new workflow items, which are the defaults for all accounts (any previously used survey questions can still be included in snapshots, too).
- Four core KPIs moved to the new “Delivery” tab. DX now shows the four core KPI measures (i.e. perceived speed, quality, ease of delivery, time loss, etc) and the analysis of key drivers impacting those KPIs in one single view.
- Improved triage workflow. To collect more useful data on different DX drivers, managers are prompted to triage all drivers instead of only their five highest-ranked. To reduce effort for managers, DX does not prompt for comments as part of triage and allows re-submitting previous responses if desired.
- Triage results are displayed alongside drivers scores to make it easier to access:
New features coming soon
We aim to have these additional features released over the next couple of weeks:
1. Self-serve UI for creating workflow items. Today, the DX team creates custom workflow items through support requests. To streamline this process, we are developing a self-service UI that will be released within the next couple of weeks.
2. Improved interviews feature. DX’s interviews feature is a powerful way to double-click into snapshot results. To make it easier for customers to leverage this feature, we’re adding the ability to launch interviews right from snapshot results.
FAQ
How is the DXI score calculated?
The mean of your driver sentiment scores, i.e., both DX drivers and custom drivers.
How are industry benchmarks calculated?
The benchmarks for DXI are the mean of the individual benchmarks for DX drivers included in your DXI score.
What if we use custom drivers?
Custom drivers are excluded from benchmarks and industry comparisons. For example, if you have 15 DX drivers and one custom driver and DX shows “-5 vs Industry 50th”, this is comparing your mean score of the 15 DX drivers (but not your custom driver) versus the benchmark.
How do I understand and improve our DXI score?
Your DXI score is a composite score of your drivers. Therefore, increases and decreases in your DXI score are driven by changes in your individual driver scores.
How is the comparison of the DXI score vs the previous DXI score calculated if there are different drivers between the two snapshots?
Each snapshot is calculated independently and then the scores between them are scored, regardless of the number of different drivers.
